Intro to Emotional Intelligence (EI)

The case of Emotional Intelligence

Why do I often lose control in meetings?  Why is it so difficult to listen to others?  Why do I get so frustrated and impatient?  Why don’t people take things as seriously as I do and make so many mistakes? Why is everybody so sensitive to my comments?

Are some of these questions familiar? If so, you may be experiencing a sense of disconnection with yourself and with your peers, team, friends… To make things better, you may need a boost of Emotional Intelligence (EI).

As psychologist Daniel Goleman describes it, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to identify (be aware of) and to manage your own emotions, and influencing the emotions of others.

There are 5 areas on which you can work to boost you EI:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-regulation
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social skills

Research by the Center for Creative Leadership has found that the primary cause of executives’ low performance and failure is related to insufficient emotional competence. They may have difficulty in navigating change, challenges working well in a team, and poor inter-personal relations.

As a global leader you would like to lead from a place of calm, confidence and control even when things get rough; open up and listen to others’ perspective; build healthy work and personal relationships in the host country and across countries. You know that developing EI is important.

Well then, if you are ready, follow this blog series on EI. I will tackle each area of development in 5 mini articles to make content more digestible and actionable. Bite size learning appears to work better than information overload.
